Missing Teeth, Gum Disease and the Risk of Breast Cancer

Missing Teeth, Gum Disease and the Risk of Breast CancerThe British Dental Health Foundation has released a study carried out by Sweden’s Karolinska Institute that is giving patients just one more reason to keep up with their oral health: breast cancer. Our Los Angeles dentist believes that it is important for all patients to remain aware of many of the more serious complication that can take place in those with missing teeth and gum disease.

Gum disease happens as the result of an individual not having plaque thoroughly removed from their teeth at regular intervals. This plaque will eventually harden onto the teeth and produce what is known as tartar. When various foods come into contact with these two substances, they will begin to produce bacteria that can form pockets under the gum line. Over time, this could lead to tooth loss or an advanced stage of gum disease known as periodontitis.

The studies that were conducted by Sweden’s Karolinska Institute have shown that women with gum disease or tooth loss were as much as 11 times more likely to develop breast cancer. While there would need to be more studies in order to confirm the reason for this link, the studies are startling nonetheless.

These types of findings make regular periodontal treatment more important than ever. If you have been putting off the services of an experienced and local dentist, contact our dental office today.
