Preventing and Treating Gingivitis

Preventing and Treating GingivitisGingivitis is a common form of gum disease that is estimated to affect as many as half of all American adults. Telltale signs of gingivitis are red or swollen gums, gums that bleed when teeth are brushed or flossed, reddish gums, or a receding gum line. Chronic bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth can also indicate gingivitis.

Often, gingivitis is caused by poor dental hygiene, making it both preventable and highly treatable. Other causes of gingivitis include the hormonal changes that often accompany pregnancy or puberty, illnesses that affect the immune system such as cancer or HIV, diabetes, smoking, and certain medications.

Treatments for mild gingivitis generally begin with a thorough dental cleaning followed by home care including consistent dental hygiene. Our dentist in Los Angeles scales the teeth to remove all plaque and tartar buildup. Prescription and over-the-counter mouthwashes may be suggested to help reduce the oral bacteria that inflame the gum tissue. Antibiotics may also be prescribed to prevent infection.

Because gingivitis is most frequently caused by poor dental hygiene, practicing good oral hygiene can prevent it. Teeth should be brushed at least daily and ideally after every meal. Flossing should be practiced every day. It is also important to have a full dental checkup and cleaning twice a year in order for the removal of plaque and tartar build up as well as to monitor for signs of gingivitis.

Left untreated, gingivitis can progress to a more serious form of gum disease, periodontitis. Please contact our Los Angeles dentist today to discuss your gingivitis treatment options.
